“You should not have a favourite weapon. To become over-familiar with one weapon is as much a fault as not knowing it sufficiently well.”

The above is a saying from the Book of Five Rings, the book fom the Japaneseswordsaint, Miyamoto Mushashi. It means you should be adaptable in the face of change. Though it is more suited to battle than anime, I find that it rings true in both situations.

As we all know, anime has become highly diversified, due to the availability and variety of source material. Books, games, American culture, Hell, even bread can become a seed from which anime series can spring forth.

And even then, the source material is as varied as the humans who created them. Science-fiction, fantasy, slice-of-life, historical technobabble, propoganda, philosophical discussion, you name it, it’s probably there. Hell even anime series themselves can become inspirations from which series emerge(or parodies thereof).

{I sure as hell hope there isn’t a HARD GAY anime series. It would kill people with hilarity and mental scarring.}

Animation companies, with such a wealth of source material, should also be flexible when handling the source material. If they can portay what the source materials without doing too much modifications to the storyline,they are considered awesome and should be treated as such. I can only think of two animation houses who can pull it off. Kyoto Animation and JC Staff.

GONZO is capable of doing awesome stuff, but they like to fuck with the source material with their ‘creative vision’. Sometimes, the fuckery gets too much, and the creators get pissed. Just take a look at GONZO’s Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate. I think people will back me when I said HellSing Ultimate was leaps and bounds over GONZO’s. Also, see KyoAni’s FMP:TSR and GONZO’s FMP.

So you see the need to be adaptable to an everchanging landscape of viewer tastes. KyoAni gets mad props for forging on with their bold experiment(and to see it pay off extremely well) while GONZO deserves to be threatened to be turned into a smoking crater.

    I can’t say much about faithfulness of the adaptation, as I rarely read manga, not to mention books. What I don’t like GONZO for is that very often their production budget seems to be gone in the second episode already and never seems to get up (see Speed Grapher as the best example).

    PS. Where the Hell is IT called Hellsing Ultimate in the anime or in promo artwork? I hate that fan-adapted title…

    Personally KyoAni and GONZO are exact anti-theses of each other. GONZO somehow lacks that spark, that inspiration which set KyoAni apart. Generally I find GONZO’s storytelling style, bland; and their characters, unintuitive. That said, I like FMP very much and deemed it as their best work I’ve seen. LastExile was watchable and Chrno Crusade had its moments. But that’s about it. GONZO’s Saikano, Kiddy Grade, Samurai 7 and Bakuten left such a bad taste in my mouth I have been intentionally skipping their works for the last 2 years.
