COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSFEEEEEEEEEEEST

So, Cosfest.

Right off the heels of the Singapore Toy and Comic Convention.

I could rant on and on about a lot of things, but then again, no one wants to hear that.

Needless to say, it was a ton better than STCC, and the latter con was supposed to be nice and fresh. Missed out on the first day, though, and I missed some broken nutbladders [read: POST THOSE PICS UP ASAP WHOEVER TOOK THEM], the Meet-the-bj0rn booth and the wacky pedotrain. Caught the pedotrain, tho it was nothing special :V

Yes I caught the “fuck yes you are the best Exia cosplayer evar” cosplay. I mean, fuck, it’s a 1:12 scale Exia without plastic injection. With working lights and interchangable weapons.

I still can’t believe Cosfest is a ton more fun than STCC.  The mind boggles.

And I’m still the antisocial jerk who rarely appears. I feel horrible.

EOY fun facts

A bunch of fun facts I remembered out of thin air.

  • Apparently, all anime characters eat at Burger King. Code Geass is the exception.
  • From the MINDEF forums: tj_han and Tsubaki are GAR for each other.
  • People will find ways to sell the most unexpected stuff. Coffee powder @ EOY, now that’s  unexpected.
  • 200 copies of A5 doujins @ 20 pages are really heavy stuff.
  • People lose sleep over EOY.
  • We have a lot of talent, but we dare not utilize it because we are too afraid of the copyright laws.
  • Cosplay comes in three flavors: SMOKING HOT, Meh, and OMG MY EYES BURN WITH THE FURY OF A THOUSAND SUNS.
  • Cosplayers really need to care for their skin more. (Well, they had a store selling skincare stuff, so it says something.)
  • We need moar SD Gundam cosplay.

Good EOY, you look kinda cool: A post-con report

And so ends another big (relatively speaking) cosplay event in Singapore. Woo nelly. Guess that means it’s time for

NEKO NEKO WAI WAI POST-CON REPORT!

Now, I’m gonna list things as I can remember them, because I kinda have a mild headache.

  • Doujin stuff
Bleh. Only sold two books. T_T I need to sell more T_T
  • Hey big fat friend, we meet again.
Guess who made an appearance? Yep, ODEX and Blue Max. Blue Max had the slightly better showing, though. At least they tried to sell me SOMETHING. Not like the people from ODEX in the corner, sitting there doing nothing. Still, they deserve a few points for actually showing up. Just a few. Just goes to show the power of limited-but-free speech does work sometimes.
  • No KKnM
Heh. There was no KKnM at EOY, which made me realize this one was going to be a letdown. And by golly gee, it was. More later. Also this meant I was not going to spend like an idiot.
  • The maids from Cosafe came
Good Lord, people, take your minds out of the gutter. They appeared at EOY, which is kinda nice, seeing as they just opened and all.
  • Rampant felmale-oriented stuff
Well, this was kinda a foregone conclusion, seeing as the majority of crossdressers are females. Females love bishies. And females have bigger spending power. I’ll take that into consideration when I plan for the next artbook.
  • Meeting the gang
Yep, I met DM, Tsu, umehiko (dressed like Yuki, she was smoking hot!), tj_han, bjorn, and the rest of the gang. Singapore Animebloggers unite! *waves a little flag, wee~ But kwok was MIA. T_T
  • Cosplayers of note
Apart from umehiko (as Yuki), there was this really nice Dark Saber one, A Saber and Rin (not all that good, tho), Shana (that sword is not long enough) TWO Suzumiya Haruhi cosplayers (My Word, there must be a rip in the time-space continuity) I think that was all.
  • STAC, what happened?
Hay STAC, nice event and all, what happened to paying for the Entrance Fee? How the Hell did bjorn and his merry friends get in for free? And where were the people manning the admission booth? I call schennigans!
  • Too much Final Fantasy 7
:V I get it, AeriTH is dead and gone :V
  • No God Knows being sung
Well, that was a minor dissapointment. I know Tsu is gonna flame for this.
  • Woo first doujin soundtrack
Mad froms to tera, who just became the first guy here to produce a doujin soundtrack! Let’s give him a warm round of applause!
  • Still no doujin games being sold
Let’s see here… … … No Touhou, no Melty Blood, no Charater Material, no IOSYS, no visual novels, no doujin stuff from Japan being sold. Yeah. I might have to rectify that.

Overall, this year’s EOY was kinda… … … … disappointing. Sure, there were quite a few good cosplayers and I still managed to snag some swag, but… … … well, there really wasn’t a lot going for me this time round. Now, I’m not dissing the cosplay scene here, but well, it’s just that this time round, I know I could spend a much better time at home.

I’m hoping the next EOY is a lot better. Or I’m gonna have to join STAC to pump in some awesome myself.

P.S: Tsu, don’t flame them too hard, eh?

P.P.S: I’m off to Thailand for the next 4 days. Don’t expect me to reply to anything until then (or until I can get to a cybercafe there, that is.)

Maid Cafe in Singapore? The mere idea of it is… … … … … … …imposhibibibibibibibibible!

Apparently, some schoolgirls plan to open a maid cafe in Orchard Road. Next to my favorite Turkish Restaurant. Okay, that last bit might have been a lie. But some schoolgirls want to open a maid cafe, and that fact stands. (And for the uninitiated, it’s the same girls who won Cosfest 2K6 and went to Japan for the World Cosplay Summit.)

Well, I’ll leave the feasabilities of such a venture to the other anibloggers (Yes, they use delicious Shion as pics, but tsubaki used a moe loli meido, so he’s forgiven, even though he deserves to have his Poland invaded by cute penguin plushies :V) but, seriously, with the cosplay community playing out like the Senate in America, can they actually pull it off without the cosplay community slandering them?(And believe me, they will. It’s the same community who tried to copyright cosplay :V) I mean, ‘Date a Maid’ service? Aren’t you trying a LITTLE too hard to get repeat customers?

Of course, we might be in for the shock of our lives. Those ‘maids’ could be male. And if they’re hiring, I’ll be applying :V

Cosfest 2006: A Reunion… … … … …of crappy cosplay, and the Singaporean animeblogger community.

Yeah, back from Cosfest 2006. Heh, way too many Bleach cosplayers for my liking.

I forgot to bring my camera, so for pictures, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

Well, I was there the last year, and EOY 2005, and, well, much has improved in the Singapore cosplay scene. Well, costume-wise. Can’t say much for the acting, for it seems like they just do it for fun, and it does not look like they’re too serious about it. But hey, it was a blast.

I met kwok and tj_han. Surprisingly, the creator of TrifutaMangoman does not look like your imagined persona. He actually looks cool and collected, until you hear people say some really interesting stuff about him. Met kwok too. Yes, people, he’s got a bad case of loliconitis. Someone had better keep the lolis away from him. And also, Iruka and a friend of mine who knows these fine fellows. Missed tsubaki due to prior arrangements. Sorry, tsu, maybe we’ll meet up for Fried Wonton Noodles wth Han, Stripey, Zyl and a few others on a Sunday.

Wait, I was mentioning cosplay, not the Singapore aniblogger community. Yeah, a few horrible ones, a lot of horrribly medicore ones, and some really good ones. Ooh, that Mai Shiranui cosplayer was smokin’, and if I am right, naked for the most part, if it wasn’t for the damned cloth. Now that’s dedication, dammit. Oh, and that Maes Hughes cosplayer was all right, and I saw a few decent Jack Sparrows. And by fuck, if you don’t have the figure, don’t do the cosplay, dammit. Those Fate cosplayers were really horrible. NASU DOES NOT APPROVE.
Sidenote: There was a NecoArc cosplayer at Cosfest. I wanna contact her. If any of you have contcts, please pass it to me. I wanna show my thanks. (I think you all know the first slogan for the site was, “Embrace NecoArc”.)

Little-known fact: There are, in fact, Trekkies in this little dot. That’s right, Trekkies. From Star Trek. Time to hurl some Trekkie jokes.

I love the Singapore doujin industry. Great artists all sround, but too scared to break the copyright laws. Damn. If only I could convince them that as long as they state their works as parodies, then under the law, well, dammit, they won’t be punished.

Cosfest, to me, has been one fun event, as long as you don’t mind dodging crowds that come at you like danmaku patterns. Heck, I think I’d rather face danmaku patterns than crowds of people.

The World Cosplay debacle

This is one of the more disturbing things to pop out on the Internet. The international cosplay community banded together to fight a country of haughty anime-obssessed bastards who had the wrong idea about cosplay. And these bastards are from my country.

Long story short, some bastard Singaporeans think cosplay consists only anime cosplay, and tried to copyright it as such. he international cosplay community got angered, and threatened to sue the shit outta the entire nation. The lawsuit didn’t go through, for the government stepped in and cut a deal with them.

Honestly, I’d push for the lawsuit meself. This country needs to be sued for trying to force their misguided concepts of cosplay to the world.

However, this is not the main crux of my post.

On behalf of the government and people of the Republic of Singapore, I apologize for the misdeeds of the cosplay community here. Even though it is not my responsibility, as a citizen of this nation, I am compelled by my principles to issue this apology. Even though it does not concern me, I am truly sorry for the trouble this has caused.

I am not able to do anything except for this for I am a lowly citizen with no power to affect the community at large. If I could more, I would have done so.

Cosplay: A short editorial treatise

Cosplay has been a more recent happening to come out of Japan. With colorful costumes, and brave hearts (and a lot of pride), cosplayers take to the streets, going to conventions, and other locations, to the joy of photographers and perverts everywhere.

But what is cosplay, anyway? Is it an excuse to waste cloth, wood, money and minor material wealth to dress up and be photographed? Or is it a passion, done by people who like their favorite characters a lot? Or is it an excuse for perverts to do dirty deeds in costume?

Actually, I have no idea. I’m not a lot into cosplay, meself. But there is a strong cosplay community here, so I do know some things about cosplay.

Cosplay, short for costume play, seems to have originated in Japan, where the people are a little crazy. In Tokyo, it is not unusual to see people dressed up in weird clothes. It is probable that some anime fan might have extrapolated the idea and dressed up as a character s/he really likes. And the fad caught on. Like wildfire.

Regardless of its origins, it has come out of Japan, and into the world. It’s actually one of the less dangerous things to come out of Japan, and when done correctly, can be damn good for te eyes. To be honest, nothing beats a good cosplayer.

Like all things, cosplay can be dangerous if in the hands of the wrong people. I believe we all have heard some stories of MANFAYE, have we not? Not to mention some of the pictues of 30-yea-old men dressed as CardCaptor Sakura. Ugh.

Regardless of your opinion on cosplay, I think it is quite harmless, as long as we stay away from the cosplay JAVs. Good fucking Lord. I have never seen one, and I hope still pictues is all I have to see of them. Japan is a sick, sick perverted place to be sometimes.

Cosplay week~ Woo~

Well, today marks Cosplay Week, where I get all excited over the fact I’m gonna blow my load my cash on more anime merch. Actually, that happens near the end of the year, but… eh.

Basically, this means in addition to the usual stuff, I get an excuse to write about cosplay. Well, for this week, anyway. I don’t have a rabid interest in cosplay, anyway.

Which culmulates in the cosplay event of the year (well, in this ‘glorious republic’ anyway). Expect pictures of good and bad cosplay (I hope). Thankfully, no manFaye has been spotted.

I’ll have an article up tomorrow.

Also, anyone who happens to be in Singapore and is going to attend Cosfest?
