Sources extremely close to Japan states that Dengeki Daioh has just decided to declare war on what is left of my collective sanity (and thankfully, not on my wallet).

I mean, I’d love to be able to make humour in almost any situation any time, but while I do have some talent, it comes on and off.

Quality Onion-esque humour is even harder to squeeze out. You’d have to find articles of mockable interest. FIRST. No, parody reporting shit from Sankaku Complex or Owen doesn’t count. TOO EASY, NOT FUNNY.

I mean, finding articles that screams “ONION MATERIAL” is extremely hard and then having the humour sense to Onion it has to take some massive cojones.

Macross 7: THE 15 EPISODE MARK

I have no idea why people NERD RAGE over Macross 7. It’s basically Overman King Gainer silly in it’s own little way, and IT’S TOTALLY AWESOME. EVEN MORE AWESOME THAN OVERMAN KING GAINER. Y U HAET MACROSS 7 T_T

Here’s a few pointers to ponder about:

• Before one calls out Basara as selfish and flying out in the middle of a concert and pretty much ignoring the entire band, take a much closer look at how Ray Lovelock handles his prima-donna superstar. Yes, Basara does deserve some flak for doing what he does, but it takes an understanding leader and a totally awesome man to actually use that to his advantage. Of course, having military connections helps A LOT. And yes, while he still flies out in the middle of a concert, he knows he has his six covered.
• Again, concerning Basara’s selfishness. Basara isn’t really driven my monetary success or recognition, but he does put in his all when it comes to the crunch. Or to the best of his ability. He’s also not afraid of playing for young children or old people. BUT HE DOES THE FUCKING TSUNDERE ROUTINE TSUNDERE FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF WHY KAWAMORI WHY TSUNDERE
• Again on Basara’s selfishness? Yes, as compared to Mylene. She wants Fire Bomber to be a commercial success, while Basara cares nothing for recognition or monetary gain. One is so focused on his conviction and the other is obsessed with being popular. Even if she does mean well. And no, they don’t see eye to eye. That makes for great drama, but shows how selfish BOTH are (No both don’t attempt to understand each other). Guess that’s why Ray is the leader and lets Basara THINKS he’s the leader
• Max and Millia: Totally still have the hots for each other, despite being totally estranged. Or maybe I’m just reading the signals wrong.
• Gamlin’s disgust about rock music is understandable, considering that MYLENE LIED TO HIM and BASARA GETS IN HIS WAY ALL THE TIME. But he is so dapper and awesome. SO DAPPER. SO VERY DAPPER.
• Millia Farina Jenius: Caring mother, totally awesome ace pilot, and the best Mayor any Macross Colonization Fleet could ever have. Glass and his slightly more capable successor can’t hold a candle to the mayor who FLIES INTO BATTLE TO SAVE THE CITY. You heard that right.
• I got nothing on Max yet. But he’s supposed to be OLD OLD MAN and he’s surrounded by HOT LADYEES and then we have SEVEN BRIDGE. Is he supposed to be 51?
• Basara may seem like a prima-donna, but for Pete’s sake, Episode 14. CHILDREN ARE IN DANGER OF BEING OMNOMNOM’D BY SPESS FAE THAT DINE ON VIRTUES. He knows. He cares. And he still manages to do his thing.
• Basara haet violence. He punched the SPESS FAE that made him shoot his missiles. He’d rather ORE NO UTAU NO KIKE than BLAM BLAM BLAM.
• And yes, while the Koenig Monster is plain awesome from a combat perspective, it’s shit for urban combat. Just like how you use MRAPs  (mine/IED-resistant vehicles) and light aircraft for COIN (counter-insurgency) to fight the enemy in a highly urban environment, and NOT TANKS.
• Have I mentioned how Ray is totally awesome? No? Then let’s repeat. RAY LOVELOCK IS TOTALLY AWESOME.
• Yes, it’s possible to sing in ANY situation. Even ones where you’re going to die. Don’t attempt to try this though, not many people have something to sing about.
• Mylene is superior. Even to the so-called legendary Lynn Minmei. I’m sorry folks, Mylene is just that good. Ranka and Sheryl do come in as close seconds, though.

Is it a bad thing to like Macross 7 despite people not liking for stupid reasons? I dunno, though, this show blows my mind (in the best possible way without the need to resort to bullets )

How does a free market capitalist get rid of a growing social problem?

a.  Deny that the problem exists.

b.  Exploit it, commodify it, and expose it to the free market, in the hopes that it’ll market itself to death.

If your answer is b, congratulations. That’s how Japan is trying to deal with the otaku problem.

(Note that I have no idea how free market capitalists solve social problems.)

Now, I’m going to ask a question.

Why would Taro Aso, Prime Minister of Japan, inheritor of big bucks, owner (debatable) of a fairly successful company, and all-around ELITE OF JAPAN want with a bunch of people the Japanese refuse to even acknowledge it’s existence?

Worse stil, why would Aso go to the extent of associating with a bunch of freaks who, in polite Japanese society, would be better off dead?

I don’t know why. But I can offer conspiracy theories.

1. Aso needs votes.

It’s the most logical thing for a politician.. We don’t know if ANY of the otaku vote, or even contribute to Japanese economy. Maybe in his completely misguided and boneheaded notions, he’s actually trying to get them to invest in Japan’s future. Which would mean he’d be actually doing something good, something I loathe to think about. But he doesn’t need the 2-3million votes, he’s got the election in the bag, since his only opponent seems to be crippled by a single scandal.

2. Aso is trying to commodify the otaku in some crazy Japan-only attempt to destroy them, or at least drive them so far underground they cease to be a problem.

I dunno about you guys, but I’ve read up enough on Japanese history and culture (read: very little) and have read on how Japan treats outsiders enough to know that the otaku are not a well-liked minority, and the anime we rant and rave about is treated like dirt. Japan doesn’t like the otaku, and through the evil magic of the Internet, it has revealed the deep dark secret that Japan has desperately sought to hide from the world. So what does one do with a problem they clearly have no solution for?I dunno about you guys, but if I was a Japanese businessman, I’d be going all out to market the problem, in the hopes that they will eventually send themselves so deep underground some sort of deployable measure would be enough to seal them off forever. Or at least until the problem ceases to be one. (Think Great Firewall of China. Hey, IT WORKS.)

I’m not a fan of the mainstream Gundam shows.

Unlike most people, I’m no big fan of Gundam.

Something ticks me off about the entire franchise. And it’s not because of the fact Bandai is using the venerable franchise as a marketing ploy to sell more overpriced boxes of plastic bitz.

It’s that it touts itself as anti-war, but for the life of me, it does not show a solution to fighting, instead putting it on a pedestal and saying to have peace, we must fight (a big problem I also have with Eva, only that it has other issues I don’t like as well). Nor does it show the effects of war.

Instead it glorifies violence and the whole process, and overwhelms the viewer with gratituous violence, telling us pretty bluntly that war = violence, and violence is bad because it will come to bite you in the ass. We already get a lot of that in the media, and we know an eye for an eye makes the whole bloody world blind.

There’s also a dangerous lack of the grittier side of the war. The role of the ground forces, for example, is something not covered in the mainstream shows, but in the side stories. Nor does it show how war affects people apart for all the violence.

Now, one can criticize me and go “Hey Drm/Hamster, but your favorite shows do that too!”. I agree, they don’t really show the grittier side of war (Macross is particularly guilty of resorting to Gundam tactics), but hey, at least Macross shows an alternative. And actually does said alternative path in the most awesome and silly manner. And Overman King Gainer is so ridiculous one cannot call it “anti-war”.

That’s why I’m no fan of Gundam. However, I recommend everyone to watch The O8th MS Team. It’s how Gundam should have been done, in my opinion. Your mileage may vary.
